Cala Luna trekking: How to Get there on Foot

Trekking Cala Luna

The trekking to Cala Luna is especially popular with visitors staying near Cala Gonone, the nearest town.

This trekking route is by far the cheapest way to reach Cala Luna and it is an excellent way to keep active, as every climb, descent and rocky stretch helps burn off the calories from all those Sardinian delights you love.

It is not, however, as quick as one may imagine. The route usually takes between two and three hours, depending on your fitness level, your pace and how often you stop along the way.

Finally, it is the pleasure of walking along the coast through an extraordinary natural landscape on your way to the beach.

Things to keep in mind

The trekking to Cala Luna begins at Cala Fuili, the furthest point you can reach by car.

Arrive early in the morning and you should be able to find free parking along the roadside without too much difficulty. The important word here is not “free”, much as everyone loves it. It is “early”.

Make sure that no part of your car extends beyond the white line marking the edge of the road.

The area is checked several times a day. And what worse ending could there be to a day spent among the sea, sunshine and caves than returning to find a parking fine waiting on your windscreen?

Departure Suggestion

Choose your departure time carefully.

The first reason is parking availability. The second is the sun.

Set off as early as possible so that you can avoid the most demanding part of the route during the midday heat. The Sardinian sun is magnificent when admired from the beach; it becomes rather less poetic when it follows you for hours along a rocky trail.

Setting off in the morning offers another advantage: the beach may still be relatively quiet when you arrive. Allow between two and three hours for the walk, depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to take in the scenery.

Are you in Good shape?

Do one need to be in peak physical condition to tackle the coastal Cala Luna trekking?

No. You do not need to be an athlete.

You should, however, consider the length of the route and the heat. The fitter and better prepared you are, the more comfortably and quickly you are likely to reach Cala Luna to spend more time on the beach.

It is a simple trade-off: less time spent arguing with your legs, more time spent by the sea.

Water & Shoes

Your footwear and water supply should be your first priorities.

Trekking shoes are not just for appearances: they are essential for tackling the trail safely.

Bring at least 1.5 litres of water for the outward journey. Once you arrive, you can buy more at the bar near the beach.

Water may feel heavy in your backpack, but once the heat sets in, you will be grateful for every drop.

The simple Trick

There is a way to combine the pleasure of the trekking with the convenience of returning by boat.

Set off early in the morning. You will find parking more easily, walk the trail while the sun is still gentle and meet fewer people along the way, allowing you to enjoy the nature.

Arriving at Cala Luna early, gives you a better chance of better spot on the beach to spend the rest of the day. This is where the little trick comes in.

You do not have to retrace the trail for the return journey. You can buy a boat ticket for Cala Gonone directly on the beach. Look for the ticket attendant, who will tell you the time when the next boat departs.

And here is the most useful part.

The combined ticket includes the boat journey to Cala Gonone harbour and the shuttle service to Cala Fuili.

If there are two of you, all it takes is a little coordination. One person can take the shuttle to Cala Fuili, collect the car and then meet the other at the harbour in Cala Gonone.

This way, you can enjoy the full beauty of the Cala Luna trekking on the outward journey while avoiding the climb on the way back.

Some might call it travel hacking. But it’s simply a sensible holiday planning.

Do You Need a Guide?

No, a guide is not essential.

It can, however, be a useful optional extra. A guide gives you the reassurance of knowing that you will not lose your way and can also tell you about the local landscape, wildlife and history.

Without a guide, you are free to make your own choices and enjoy a greater sense of independence. With a guide, on the other hand, you have the pleasure of not having to pretend that you know where you are going.

Both options have their merits.
